Senator EDWARD "TED" KENNEDY of Massachusetts was the younger brother of both President JOHN F. KENNEDY and Senator ROBERT F. KENNEDY, both of whom were assassinated (in 1963 and 1968, respectively).  Many Democrats urged Ted to run against President RICHARD M. NIXON in the 1972 US Presidential campaign; but the 1969 Chappaquiddick Scandal was still too fresh in the minds of most American voters; and Senator Kennedy dropped out fairly early in the campaign.

In early 1969, after the assassination of Senator ROBERT F. KENNEDY I read an article in our local newspaper about a teenage girl from the Twin Cities who had started a campaign to have a statue of Kennedy erected in Minnesota.  I telephoned her and volunteered to raise funds for her project, by selling pin backs endorsing the presidential candidacy of his brother, Senator EDWARD "TED" KENNEDY for the 1972 US Presidential race.  I designed the pin; but the local manufacturer skewed one of the stars on my artwork -- and the result is as shown.  Only a few hundred of these pins were manufactured; and the statue was never erected.
