Balai du Valet Ristic Avant-guarde Theater Ballet 1921 Dadaism
Le balai du valet[The Valet Broom] – In the Serbian language Sobareva Metla *** Two-sided printed sheet from machine ledges. Fragment of the announcement sheet of a Dadaist dance performance for four ballerinas and various staff who performed on February 16th, 1923. It was the 7th of 13 program points organized by the representatives of the Belgrade avant-garde movement under the motto »The 1002nd Night« in the local Casino Hotel artists ball World premiere (and probably only one ever performed). The front of the sheet adorns a striking woodcut by the architect and painter Aleksandar Deroko, who is also responsible for the curtain, backdrop, and costumes of this event. Deroko is regarded as one of the most exposed pictorial representatives of modernity in Yugoslavia and also was a collaborator of the surrealist periodical edition »Putevi« (1922-23). The caricature motif of ballerina here was also used for a later poster also designed by Deroko. The list on the reverse shows that the music for the »grotesque ballet« announced here comes from Miloje Milojevi?, a leading representative of modern music in Yugoslavia at the time, who saw himself in the tradition of Eric Satie and Igor Stravinsky. Librettists were Marko Risti? and Rastko Petrovi?, two central literal figures of Serbian surrealism. This copy has a section on the top of the third page showing a musical notation composed by influential Serbian composer Miloje Milojevi? with his signature mimeographed (visible on scans). Rarity: *** Condition: Worn, torn along the edges, stained, signs of folding. Dimensions: 185 x 130 mm.
