THE COMPLETE FARRIER, OR HORSE DOCTOR: ALSO THE COMPLETE CATTLE DOCTOR:
CONTAINING FULL AND COMPLETE DIRECTIONS FOR CHOOSING, BREEDING, REARING, AND GENERAL MANAGEMENT; TOGETHER WITH ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS, CAUSES, PECULIAR SYMPTOMS, AND THE MOST APPROVED METHOD OF CURING ALL DISEASES TO WHICH HORSES AND CATTLE ARE SUBJECT. THIED EDITION, ENLARGED AND IMPROVED
By W. B. Sloan
Chicago, 1849

Walter B. Sloan was the first patent medicine 'king' of Chicago. His cures for man and beast were sold widely in the West. With a section on definitions "of words not in general use," and a variety of potions and recipes, the book also includes testimonials to the remarkable qualities of Sloan's 'Family Ointment,' "universally acknowledged to be an infallible remedy for promoting insensible perspiration, drawing out the inflammation from a wound, relieving pain of every kind."

Extremely rare! Two books in one, has two separate title pages but continuous pagination. Original pictorial boards. The third edition, following the first of 1848, and the earliest one that I could find listed. Includes material on the breeding, management, conformation and points of the horse, care and management of cattle with some helpful hints for making cheese and butter, and segments on diseases and treatments for both animals.

Nice find for the veterinaria or veterinary medicine collector!
