Pictures by A. B. Houghton

Engraved by the Brothers Dalziel (Camden Press)

Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, Broadway, Ludgate Hill (London), 1865 (First edition)

Notable primarily for the 35 wonderful Dalziel engravings based on the art work of Arthur Boyd Houghton. Each engraving is printed on card stock. Sumptiously bound (likely by S. Hogg - the bookmakers label is missing though there is a discolored space where it used to be in the rear overleaf) in maroon Moroccan leather with elaborate gilt stamping, beveled edges, and 5 spine bands. All page edges are gilded. There is a stamp on the title overleaf identifying the book as "Dalziel Book 1865" - their common practice ahead of the holiday gift-giving season. 2 pages of advertising in the front. Original engravings by the Dalziels are held in major museums today including the British Museum and the Metropolitan.

This copy originally belonged to the wealthy New York socialite Geraldine L. Hoyt (1864 Christmas gift inscription) and the book bears the Hoyt insignia inside the front cover (The Point - Staatsburgh, Dutchess Co. N.Y.) The family mansion in Staatsburgh was built in 1855 and still stands today although the last descendant was forced out by New York State in 1975 in an effort to reclaim the land for a park.

This book is extremely rare, especially in its first edition. 10.25" x 8.25". Light rubbing to the extremities. Owner's insignia on front endpaper. Light to moderate foxing (spotting) throughout (please refer to photos). There is a 1" closed tear in the title page.
