A traditional sun protection material, the seeds of the Urucum tree are known for their ability to protect the skin from free radicals damage. Traditionally used to treat wounds and burns, due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is ideal for use in cosmetics because of these same abilities. The unsaponifiables from the seeds are the world's richest source of tocotrienol, a member of the Vitamin E group, known to be more effective in preventing damage caused by free radicals.
Urucum protects skin better from UV damage than the standard Vitamin E on the market.
Cells treated with Tocotienol (found in Urucum) and UVB showed 63 % less damage than cells treated with UVB alone.
Urucum is also used for colouring confectionery, butter and cheeses. It is more widely used in the Caribbean and Latin America.
The seeds are also particularly associated with Filipino cuisine, in dishes like; ukoy, shrimp and sweet potato fritters; pipian, chicken and pork.
Urucum pigment contains bixine and norbixine, valuable natural colorants used for industrial food and beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, and as natural dyes for textiles
The natural coloring from Urucum has since been used throughout Brazil in all sorts of country cooking and also as a general dye.
