What Does This Book Not Cover? This book does not cover processes used for preserving, repairing and caring for extremely rare and old books or manuscripts for archival purposes or museum collections. The techniques used to care for, make common repairs, and preserve books outlined in this book are not recommended for highly collectable and rare items. Sophisticated techniques and processes used to repair damages of extremely rare and important books should be attempted only by professional book restoration experts or binders. Do not take action on a little fix up here and there when you are dealing with important documents or rare or one-of-a-kind, museum piece books. It is best to leave it as it is and consult an expert. Who Am I and Why am I Uniquely Qualified to Write this Book? I have been collecting books for over 25 years and have bought, sold and donated over 500,000 books in the last several years. I am the founder of Las Vegas Book Company, a division of M. Mitch Freeland's Learning Academy, a diversified publisher of all of my books, fiction and non-fiction. I also manage other companies. I have been a hands-on publisher since the company’s inception. I have sold used books on over thirty different websites, including all the big ones: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Alibris, Abe,, etc., and including my own website: MitchFreeland. During this time I have cleaned and repaired thousands of books. I have learned what works and what does not work with all kinds of books. Unfortunately, however, I have even damaged books during experimental cleanings and repairs. Lucky for me the books weren’t expensive or collectable. From a collector and bookseller perspective, I have become accustomed to making repairs quickly and efficiently and attacking book condition problems effectively. Many books that I have cleaned and repaired were not collectable or rare, they were, however, important to the buyer; therefore, making their appearance and condition important to me. Most repairs are easy, as with most cleanings. The tricky part comes when knowing what you are dealing with and deciding to not do a thing; leave it the way it is. Which may be the best inaction to take.
