Chinese Oriental Bird Design Hand Made Papier Mache Trinket Box Inside Detailed

In good condition, normal wear to the trinket box , bottom shows fading/tear.

It looks like it's made out of papier mache, however I am not 100% sure. 
It is quite heavy weighing 15.4 ounces, once shipped it will be well over 1 lbs.
The inside has a very detailed print of Chinese men/family or workers.
In addition, inside there are a lot of what I believe is Chinese characters. 
It has an open hinge on the front of the box. 

I am not sure if it's vintage or made to look vintage, I had it for approximately 5 years and bought it at a estate sale.
